Los Angeles-based Malaysian singer-songwriter Yunalis binti Mat Zara’ai, professionally known as Yuna, has mandated herself as one of the most promising artists in today’s vibrant musical market. Taking her eclectic R&B sound as a grassroots cultural purveyor to the forefront of the R&B charts, she has received fans from the likes of Pharrell Williams, DJ Premier, Usher, Jhené Aiko, and more. In 2016 she released her critically-acclaimed third studio album Chapters, quickly becoming one of the best R&B albums of the year. Now, in preparation for her upcoming album, she has released a beautifully soul-stirring cut titled “Forevermore.”
The new single remains an ode to her home country of Malaysia, articulating and channeling the melody of the “syair,” which is a form of traditional Malay poetry. She equally nods to her upbringing with a vibrantly utilized Kompang drum that helps in filling out the atmospherically-ridden track. The cut carries on in transmitting her signature R&B flair, providing richly tuned and beautifully executed vocals on top of an intriguingly smooth instrumental by frequent collaborator Robin Hannibal.
The visual, directed by husband Adam Sinclair, was shot across 11 locations in Malaysia, showcasing the deeply enriching culture of her home country. In a press release alongside the track, Yuna shared that the visual was a “fantastical depiction of my childhood memories,” providing a rich variation of shots and locations that share a diverse slice her lively upbringing.
